WAN Bandwidth Utilization %

Hey All,

     Just took over our Solarwinds a month and a half ago so I'm kinda new to this. My boss asked me recently for a perf analysis showing overall bandwidth % usage for our 60 some sites so that when we get complaints, we can easily check and see if the circuits are being maxed out. I could do that by monitoring the WAN interfaces, however, some of these sites have more than 1 circuit, some firewalls utilize bandwidth and some internet routes out through MPLS. What I started doing was adding each individual wan interface to the same perf analysis chart, however, it didn't seem to be up to date and I couldn't use realtime monitoring because there were more than 10 devices monitored. I already went through the primary WANs and set the bandwidth for each circuit manually so the % is accurate. Also is there a way to combine the total bandwidth on the main chart but see a breakdown between the different interfaces when clicking down into the charts? Not really sure where I need to start or if there is a better way to do this...

Hi everyone,

 

I am pleased to announce the availability of the second version of the ARM Template Generator Tool.

The documentation is now included in the download package.

 

What´s new?

Since i can only test so much on my own I would ask everyone using the Import feature to keep backups of the original template files or just not save over them, at least for now.

If you have any issues or see wonky behaviour please let me know, preferably with a detailed description of the expected and actual behaviour.

 

The old version will stay available under the old link for now.

- made sure the import function respects the order of AD Attributes (should have been the case before, if you see anything to the contrary let me know)

- added buttons for re-ordering AD Attributes

- fixed issue with the import and export function reading/writing the "IsScriptEnabledDefault" property in the scriptoptions as "IsScriptEnabledByDefault" (note that when you import a template with the faulty property name the value will have to be reconfigured manually)

SolarWinds Log Manager for Orion Polling Service service terminated unexpectedly

I'm running into a number of events in my primary poller's event log indicating "The SolarWinds Log Manager for Orion Polling Service service terminated unexpectedly". The crashes happen at seemingly random times, though I'd figure there's likely a bad/malformed event of some sort (or something in that vein) causing it. Are there any logs for that service specifically that can give me a clue what might be happening? I looked through all the typical log folders and can't find one. Wanted to do a little more due-diligence on my end before opening a case with support.

Alert for Windows Event ID

Is there a way I can have SolarWinds capture the occurrence of a particular event ID in Windows?  A usage case would be to have the product alert us when the event ID appears indicating a certificate is about to expire.  Thanks.

SQL Server Agent - HA Configuration

I have an alert configured using a Windows Service Monitor. I have two servers in an active/passive cluster where the Agent only runs on the active server. However, the alert is triggering on the server that is passive. What can I do I alert on the active server only in this configuration?

Web Request Monitor (CURL)

Has anyone been able to use curl in a SAM component monitor successfully?

 

Any examples or templates? I searched for curl but did not find anything.

 

I see this post for using PowerShell but this vendor apparently requires curl for their application.

 

Web Site (PowerShell) monitor template that allows customized healthy status codes

 

I'm finding a ton of bash scripts to do this but I guess I need hand holding with doing it with SAM.

 

I suppose a SAM Linux monitor is the way, but just looking for any guidance on this. Do I need to install curl on the MPE?

Event Alert Question

I setup a monitor to check my Solarwinds APP server for Event ID 10028. This is when a node cannot access the Solarwinds App server.  What I am trying to figure out is how to configure the alert to let me know what is in the event message.  Can I do that at all?  So something that will let me know what was in the message. Ideally if I can figure this out I have another event monitor monitoring account lockouts that I would like to alert on as well.  Thanks!

Any way to force a VMWare host to use VMAN Orion polling?

We have a 192-socket VMAN license. We ended up with more VMWare hosts than we anticipated and maxed out our license, which caused new VMWare hosts to be polled using basic polling. We have several standalone hosts (not monitored through a vCenter) that we switched from VMAN Orion polling to Basic polling, so we now have license sockets available. Has anyone found a way to force Solarwinds to switch a VMWare host from basic to VMAN Orion polling?

Email Custom Property Variable

Has anyone set an email custom property for an Application object?  I added a new Applications custom property called "Email_Notification", set the email address on the application page, and set the alert up with a variable called ${Email_Notification}.  When I test the alert action I continue to get "The specified string is not in the form required for an e-mail address.".  I've tried several variable iterations and the only one that worked is, ${Node.email}, but falls under the Node custom property time.  I'm wanting Application.

I often get alerts showing CPU reached 100%.  This is good, however by the time I get to looking at the issue, it's gone.  How can I go "back in time" to determine what process was causing my CPU to spike?

[SWQL] Custom queries with text/hyperlink within table

Hi,

 

First of all, apologies for the lengthy inquiry and if this is posted in the wrong section, I'm quite new to SWQL. So here goes, as per the title, there are a few inquiries regarding the matter:

 

1. My custom query is to display "nodes up/nodes available" and "transactions up/transactions available" in a custom table widget

 

Currently looks like:

Prefer to look like (Nodes/Transactions < Total, text should turn red, else, text is green):

2. Would like to ask whether it is possible to use simple hyperlink referencing ("_LinkFor_" seems to require the URLs being available within the DB) within a SWQL query. As I understand and tried so far, using "<a href>" does not seem to work with SWQL

--Working example that displays each node link

3. How can I apply custom colours within my query (using CASE, so far have not been able to make it work). Had referred to a sample here: Text colour to display alerts using custom query

4. Merging data within two separate columns with custom format (per above preferred table)

5. The table should display Application #1, Application #2, etc. When using "Count", I am unable to add rows for the applications nor being able to use "TOP #".

I've managed to display each nodes/transactions available within the Applications instead (also by default it allows to create Hyperlinks via the "_LinkFor_Node"), however, what is needed is the summary count of all nodes/transactions

 

Your advice and guidance is highly appreciated, thank you in advance.

Smart Card authentication for SAM individual accounts

Hello!

 

I want to be able to use Smart Card login for SAM application users that do NOT have Windows AD accounts on the local domain. Everything I am finding has instructions for either configuring SAM to directly authenticate to an AD account, or using client certificate mapping to map a token back to a Windows OS account. I'm not able to do either here as the environment we're operating is on a child domain, but our actual administrative accounts that we log in with are on a different domain within the forest that we / the SAM service account don't have access to.

 

Is it possible to configure a SAM individual account to utilize a smart card without it being tied to an AD account?

Unmanage a time period in the past

Is there a way to unmanage a time period in the past so it doesn't count against uptime metrics? For example, if one of our sites shuts down power to the whole site without notifying us? The GUI allows you to unmanage for a time period that starts in the past, but the uptime metrics still count that downtime.

SCCM Version Support & Upgrade Certificate

I have two questions, ahead of upgrading PM for the first time.  Reviewing the Upgrade Preflight Checklist, I find the "Run All Windows Updates" task.  Makes sense, but there is a note stating to "Generate a new 2048-bit publishing certificate" once the Windows Updates are applied.  It seems odd to me one would have anything to do with the other, and there is nothing later in the document detailing what to do with the new certificate.  In my environment, we ended up having to take the WSUS code certificate and deploy it in GPO to the clients to support the self signed updates.  So if I reissue it, I can only assume that I will have to deploy it again.  Has anyone had to follow this step and issue a new certificate during the Windows Update task?

 

Second, has anyone had experience upgrading SCCM beyond the version supported in the release notes?  I am on 2.1.7 currently, but the SCCM team is looking to move to 1910, which is not supported on either 2.1.7 or 2019.4 (up to 1906).  Are people upgrading SCCM beyond the recommendation successfully?  Is anyone running SCCM 1910 with either 2.1.7 or 2019.4?  Thank you!

email notification to Office 365 account

We are using the free ipMonitor tool to monitor pings on all production servers. I have all of the settings in place for Office 365 email notifications but they fail to get to the accounts. They work when I point them to a gmail.com or outlook.com account but Office 365 accounts fail.

 

 

 

SMTP: smtp.office365.com

Port: 587

 

tls is active

encryption is turned on in the credentials settings and allowed over SSL

Patch Manager Sync - Key already exists

Steps to reproduce:

Admin & Reporting > Software Publishing > Right click (or from action panel) > Synchro Settings

Immediately pops an error "Unable to retrieve Patch Manager Update Settings. Once you close that, I get the normal Third Party Update Options box but can't set anything in any tab as trusted publishers is blank and won't let you save.

 

The error:

Orion.Engines.Pollers - What does this represent?

I've been doing a ton of clean-up and enhancements to our SolarWinds implementation here over the past year. Recently, I found a nice SolarWinds poller statistics display that I lightly modified for my use. I'm very happy with the display, but I'm a bit disturbed by what it is saying...

Orion.Engines.Pollers is almost 15k..?!

In the explanation of the panel the number attached to Orion.Engines.Pollers was tagged as the number of UNDP instances running on the system. I can in no way understand where the number 14927 for my primary poller is coming from. To say it is a "bit distressing" is an understatement! The fact that my primary poller shows this number of pollers of any kind against 400 nodes and 14k interfaces is also in stark contrast with my second poller that has 0 pollers with almost 1000 nodes and 8k interfaces.

 

Can anyone explain what Orion.Engines.Pollers is in fact counting? Could it be somehow corrupted? Should I just format and start over? (haha can't do that, but boy do I wish I could...)

 

And yes I know I'm running at 105% on my main poller. I have additional pollers budgeted for the upcoming fiscal year.
